Pipe Relining for Damaged Underground Pipes

When pipes fail underground, it usually doesn’t happen quietly. Blocked drains that keep coming back. Water takes longer to disappear. Unpleasant smells linger around the home, even after the drain has been cleared.

Pipe relining offers a way to fix these issues without digging up gardens, driveways, or concrete slabs. At All Elements Plumbing and Gas, we always start with an inspection so we can find the cause and recommend the right solution for your home.

What is Pipe Relining

Pipe relining, sometimes referred to as drain relining, is a no dig method used to repair damaged pipes from the inside. A liner is installed within the existing pipe and cured in place, forming a strong internal pipe that restores flow and seals damage. This method is commonly used for sewer pipe relining and stormwater pipes.

This approach allows pipes to be repaired without excavation when the pipe structure is suitable.

How Pipe Relining Fixes Damaged Pipes

Pipe relining works by creating a new pipe inside the existing one. The liner is inserted into the damaged pipe and cured so it bonds to the internal surface. Once set, it seals cracks, joints, and areas where tree roots have entered.

This restores the pipe’s strength and creates a smooth internal surface that improves flow and helps prevent future blockages. Because the original pipe stays in place, the repair addresses the cause of the problem without excavation.

Signs You May Need Pipe Relining

Most homeowners do not realise their pipes are damaged until the same problems keep coming back. A drain gets cleared, then blocks again. The smell disappears, then returns.

Common signs include:

R

Recurring blocked drains

R

Slow draining sinks, showers, or toilets

R

Gurgling sounds coming from the pipes

R

Sewage smells inside or outside the home

R

Tree roots found during previous drain clearing

These signs do not automatically mean pipe relining is required. They do indicate the pipe needs to be inspected so the condition can be properly assessed.

When Pipe Relining is the Right Solution

Pipe relining works best when the pipe is damaged but still structurally sound. It is designed to strengthen the existing pipe from the inside and prevent the damage from getting worse over time.

It is commonly recommended when damage runs along a section of pipe rather than one isolated point, or when the pipe sits beneath slabs, driveways, or other hard surfaces where digging would cause unnecessary disruption.

A CCTV drain inspection allows us to confirm whether pipe relining will provide a long term fix or if another repair method is more suitable.

When Pipe Relining May Not Be Suitable

Pipe relining is not always the right solution. That is why every job starts with a CCTV inspection.

In some cases, the inspection may show that the pipe condition is not suitable for relining. This can happen when the pipe has collapsed, or when the issue is caused by how the pipe was originally installed rather than damage to the pipe itself.

When this happens, we explain what we have found and talk through the most practical next step, with minimal disruption in mind.

Inspect

We start with a CCTV drain inspection to assess the condition of the pipe and identify the cause of the issue.

Why Homeowners Choose Pipe Relining

Pipe relining fixes the problem without turning a plumbing issue into a major building project. There is usually no need to dig through concrete, lift paving, or damage established gardens. That matters when pipes sit under slabs, driveways, or hard to access areas.

For many homeowners, pipe relining is also a cost effective and faster option compared to full pipe replacement. Because the repair happens inside the existing pipe, disruption is reduced and turnaround time is often shorter. When the pipe condition allows, it is a practical long term solution with minimal disruption to your home.

Pipe Relining FAQs

How much does pipe relining cost?
The cost of pipe relining depends on the length of pipe, diameter, access, and the extent of the damage. In many cases, it is more cost effective than digging up and replacing pipes, especially when pipes run under slabs, driveways, or hard surfaces. A camera inspection is required to provide an accurate quote.
How long does pipe relining take?
Most pipe relining jobs can be completed within a day once the pipe has been inspected and confirmed as suitable. Larger or more complex pipes may take longer, but the process is generally much faster than traditional excavation and replacement.
Is pipe relining better than replacing pipes?
Pipe relining is often the preferred option when the pipe is damaged but still structurally sound. It avoids digging, reduces disruption, and can extend the life of the pipe for decades. Pipe replacement may be recommended if the pipe has collapsed or has installation issues.
Does pipe relining fix tree root damage
Yes. Pipe relining is commonly used to seal cracks and joints where tree roots enter pipes. Once relined, the pipe is sealed from the inside, which helps prevent roots from growing back into the drain.
How long does pipe relining last?
When installed correctly, pipe relining is designed to last for decades. The liner forms a durable internal pipe that resists cracking, corrosion, and root intrusion.
